Hyderabad: A UK-based politician with roots in Telangana, Uday Nagaraju, has been nominated to the House of Lords, marking a significant milestone for the Indian diaspora and his hometown of Karimnagar.
The 46-year-old, who is also related to former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, spent his early years in Warangal before pursuing engineering in Maharashtra and later moving to the UK nearly 25 years ago for higher studies, eventually making it his home.
An active member of the Labour Party, Uday Nagaraju made his electoral debut in the 2024 general elections, contesting from the North Bedfordshire parliamentary constituency—a Conservative stronghold. Although he lost, his campaign drew attention within party circles.
On Dec 10, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a list of 25 individuals recommended for peerages, including Uday Nagaraju. Once the formal process is completed, he will take his seat in the House of Lords and assume the title ‘Lord' Uday Nagaraju.
The IT professional and founder of AI Policy Labs received a wave of congratulatory messages from political leaders in Telangana.
"I wholeheartedly congratulate Uday Nagaraju on being nominated by the King of England to the House of Lords… this rare honour is truly inspirational," former minister and BRS working president KT Rama Rao said on Thursday.
BJP leader NV Subhash, grandson of Narasimha Rao, posted a detailed message praising Uday's "persistence, discipline, and quiet determination," calling the nomination a proud moment for Telangana and their extended family.
Roads and buildings minister Ponnam Prabhakar and Union minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar also extended their congratulations, with Prabhakar noting that Uday Nagaraju's "10 years of hard work and dedication have finally been rewarded."
